Baddeck Marine, a full-service marina on Bras d'Or Lake in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.
In recognition of the event, the business spent Labour Day entertaining a group of its loyal customers at the marina. "2013 is our 40th year in business,' says Flossy Hutchison, Baddeck Marine's Office Manager who has been with the company for 13 years. "We've been celebrating all year long. In early August, we held a draw for a bag of marine goodies. Customers making purchases over $20 in our store received a ballot in the draw. Just this past Monday, we had a customer appreciation day along with a cake and coffee to celebrate.'
Hutchison says the biggest change she's seen at the business during her tenure has been improvements to Baddeck Marine's infrastructure. "Since I started, we've built a new retail store, built a new storage facility, upgraded our wharf facilities and last year we sold a marina that we operated on the other side of the lake to focus on our marina here. That really helped us to grow the business on this side. We're always changing.'
Baddeck Marine first opened for business in 1973 when Charles Weaver started a business under the name "Baddeck Marine and Sports.'
Stewart Germani, who has served as Baddeck Marine's President for approximately the past decade, oversees the operation of the business today. The marina has about 14 slips and 14 moorings at its disposal. Baddeck Marine utilizes computerized engine diagnostic software to complement its other marine service tools and techniques. The company also offers launch and haul-out, indoor and outdoor storage, shrink-wrapping, fuel and pump out, showers and laundry. It also has a chandlery offering charts, tools, parts and accessories.
