Boating Ontario Offering Summer Student Marina Training

From April to June, Boating Ontario will be offering Student Marine Training Workshops for summer students hired to work at marinas during the boating season. The association will hold the workshops at 13 different marinas around the province.

“According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour (MOL), young workers face a greater-than-average risk of injury,” says Ed Leeman, Boating Ontario's Treasurer and Workshop Trainer. “In June 2009, Ontario MOL inspectors conducted a 'young worker blitz' to check on the health and safety of new and young workers at industrial sector workplaces. There is an estimated 2,000 to 2500 summer students hired by Boating Ontario members each summer to assist with delivering our services to boaters each year.”

Training topics will include health and safety in the workplace, workplace hazardous materials information system (WHMIS), Emergency fire and spill response, gas dock operation, standard operating procedures, and customer service.

Boating Ontario is charging $125 per student for enrollment for the workshop. In addition to the training, students will receive a safety whistle with a breakaway lanyard, a certificate for completing the training and a workshop manual for reference.

A minimum of 15 individuals guarantees a session will run and additional sessions may be scheduled in mid April following the 2011 Boating Ontario Regional Meetings.
