Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) will be consolidating all aspects of its Evinrude outboard business into its facility in Sturtevant, WI by the end of 2011.
Beginning in late spring, BRP will start to move its staff as well as product development, marketing and sales operations from its Waukegan, IL facility and relocate them to Sturtevant. According to Julie Johnson, Media Relations for Evinrude, Canadian dealers are not expected to experience any disruptions in the delivery of outboards as a result of the move.
The consolidation means that for the moment the Waukegan, IL facility will be mothballed. “The decision has been made not to use it,” says Johnson. “It's a 50-year old complex. The investment required to bring the Waukegan facility up to speed where it would be efficient to operate is just not worth it. It was a much better business decision to modify the Sturtevant facility to accommodate our operations that are currently at Waukegan. BRP believes that although there are no tangible savings in the short-term, this investment will have returns in terms of cohesion, collaboration, flexibility and our continued ability to deliver on innovation.”
Johnson says the distance between the two facilities is only 30 miles, making it possible for employees from Waukegan to relocate.
To help accomplish the transition, BRP anticipates investing $15 million in the Sturtevant facility in the next three years. A portion of that investment includes incentives from the State of Wisconsin. “There are some monies coming from the state and local municipalities,” says Johnson. “There will be substantial office renovations to the Sturtevant facility to accommodate 130 additional people and substantial renovation in the plant to accommodate the research and development operations.”
With the addition of the staff from the Waukegan facility, 430 people will be employed at the Sturtevant plant.
