Canadian Solar-Powered Boat Recognized At International Conference

A Canadian-made solar-powered boat recently won a first place finish at the “Future of Electric Vehicles” conference and exhibition in San Jose, CA.

The Loon, developed by the Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company, Orillia, ON, was one of three new products recognized at the December conference. The boat stretches 22 feet, 4 inches in overall length and accommodates eight passengers. Its electric motor is said to produce equivalent thrust to a 15 horsepower gas outboard, offering a top speed near 10 mph and a range in excess of 50 miles, or 80 kilometres.

Montgomery Gisborne, Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company President, says his company has “aggressive plans” to begin production of their Loon solar-powered boat in 2011 – in New York State. No word yet on expected pricing, or distribution plans.

Other winners at the conference included Revolution Motors, which won a gold award in the Imaginative Vehicle category, and Levant Power Corporation, which won gold in  the New Component or Material category.
