Sleipner Motor was declared the overall winner of the 2013 Design Award METS, presented this morning just before the official opening of the 26th Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) at the Amsterdam RAI.
The Fredrikstad, Norway-based company's new vector fin stabilizers were selected as the overall DAME winner for 2013, as well as the winner of the machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems and fittings category. Additional category winners included: Volvo Penta's Glass Cockpit System in the Marine electronics and related software category; Oceanair's Skysol Motion in the Interior equipment, furnishings, materials, and electrical fittings used in cabins category; the Vanclaes boat trailer in the Marina equipment, boatyard equipment, and boat construction tools and materials category; Nomen Clip-cleat in the Deck equipment, sails, and rigging category; the READING boarding ring in the Clothing and crew accessories category; and Fraser Optics Monolite in the Lifesaving and safety equipment category.
"For all marine products today we need a leap forward to attract buyers,' said Bill Dixon, Chair of the DAME Awards Jury. "It's not enough that a product does what it needs to do – it needs to look the part as well. We commend all entrants who have shown clear evidence of employing design the right way through the development and manufacturing process, from function to form.'
"The number of nominations this year is the highest for some time,' added Dixon. "This reflects the overall quality of the entry, which is undoubtedly improved on previous years. We also had a very close call between some of the category finalists before selecting a worthy DAME Award winner.'
The 26th METS runs through November 21 at the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre, the Netherlands.
