The Community of Lewisporte in Newfoundland and Labrador will be hosting the first North Atlantic Marina and Recreational Boating Conference, June 18 to 21, 2009.
The conference, held in an effort to capture the economic possibilities of recreational boating in Newfoundland and Labrador, is expected to host delegates from more than 250 coastal communities and marinas throughout the province. Some topics of discussion will include marina development and management, environmental stewardship as well as cruise ship attraction and bare boat chartering.
“Lewisporte and the whole north east coast of the province have been working to develop its infrastructure for marinas and yacht clubs for quite sometime,” said Ron Dawe, event coordinator and member of the board of directors for the Atlantic Marine Trades Association (AMTA). “We want to bring all the marinas together for a common cause and try to focus on what needs to be done.”
In addition to featuring a series of speakers from all levels of government and the marine industry, the conference will host a boat show, highlighting the Newfoundland and Labrador boat building industry. A conference dinner will also be held and the steering committee has selected two charities to be the recipients of a portion of the proceeds, the Daffodil Place and the Children's Wish Foundation.
