Mercury Marine, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, has added four new engines to its extensive lineup of marine engines. At a media-only event held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the manufacturer unveiled an all-new MerCruiser 4.5L 250hp sterndrive as well as new lighter weight 75, 90 and 115hp four stroke outboards in front of a group of 30 journalists from Canada, the US and several other countries.
Mercury says its three new four stroke outboards will be best matched with bass, deep-vee, runabout and offshore boats as well as pontoons and saltwater skiffs.
The new Mercury MerCruiser 4.5L 250hp sterndrive was designed and is manufactured at Mercury Marine's world headquarters in Fond du Lac.
"We are proud to introduce the next generation of sterndrive technology with this ground-breaking new engine,' said Mercury Marine President John Pfeifer of the 450. "This is a great power source that provides features, benefits and technology that make boating more enjoyable and worry-free. This engine was purpose-built for marine use and it delivers Mercury's proven performance, durability and ease of service.'
The MerCruiser 4.5L incorporates design innovations including a long runner scrolled intake manifold and high displacement, which is said to produce an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. This V-6 engine weighs 130 pounds less than a 5.0L V-8 small block, yet Mercury says delivers similar performance.
The 4.5L's newly designed rear-facing throttle body, anti-whistle throttle plate, engine cover and mounts, lightweight flywheel, fuel supply module, and structural oil pan all work together to deliver an improved idle and smoothness as well as low noise and vibration for a better boating experience.
The MerCruiser 4.5L V-6 is compatible with SmartCraft Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) for immediate throttle response and smooth shifting throughout the rpm band. An option for the 4.5L V-6 with DTS is Joystick Piloting, provides a potentially more simple and user friendly docking experience and maneuverability.
The 4.5L V-6 also offers Adaptive Speed Control (ASC), which automatically maintains the set rpm point regardless of load or condition changes, such as tight turns, tow sports and lower speeds on plane. Mercury says the result is increased throttle response and a ‘sportier' feel for the driver, who no longer has to make continual throttle-control adjustments.
Mercury Marine built the ultimate anti-corrosion protection system into the 4.5L V-6, using durable cast-iron componentry wherever the engine encounters seawater, and corrosion-resistant aluminum and composites everywhere else. Digital rather than analog sensors are used throughout. As with all MerCruiser engines, the 4.5L sterndrive comes with a standard three-year corrosion warranty, plus Mercury's limited manufacturer's warranty of up to two years.
Mercury paid particular attention to ease of maintenance when designing the MerCruiser 4.5L V-6, eliminating the need for the traditional 20-hour service. This unit features a maintenance center near the top-front section of the engine, making consumer touch-points – including oil filter and fill – easily identifiable and accessible. Additionally, the valve train is maintenance-free for the life of the engine, and a QR code on the engine's service label allows smartphone users to access ‘how-to' videos online. The 4.5L V-6 also features a ‘season-extending' drain system that can keep you boating during the transition times between seasons.
75hp, 90hp, 115hp Outboards
Mercury says its newest outboards are 20 pounds lighter than its closest four-stroke competition. The new engines feature a 2.1-liter, four-cylinder, eight-valve, single-overhead-cam design that delivers improved torque and horsepower.
The new Mercury four stroke engines are built with the same architecture as Mercury's 150 FourStroke.
An all-new hydro-dynamically designed standard gearcase decreases drag by 15 percent to improve efficiency and performance, thus consuming less fuel and increasing operating range. The standard gearcase significantly improves performance on aluminum or fibreglass bass boats, flats boats, skiffs, and smaller (less than 18 feet)) deep-vee and runabouts.
The units feature Mercury Command Thrust gearcases that deliver even better control and power for heavier boats or boats that tend to run wet – more hull surface remaining in contact with the water after its planed. The Command Thrust models use the same bigger gearcase housing as the Mercury 150 FourStroke, but with an all-new 2.38:1 ratio ideally suited for pontoons and heavier boats. Mercury says heavy and wet-running boats will benefit from the gearcase's ability to quickly lift a hull out of the water, resulting in greater acceleration and superior ability to hold plane at slower speeds.
A 115hp Command Thrust model with left-hand rotation is available for improved handling and docking in a dual-engine installations, ideal for offshore fishing enthusiasts on a budget. Command Thrust outboards benefit from a larger, heavy-duty gearcase, as well as the larger-diameter class of V6 propellers that go with it, such as Mercury's popular Enertia series.
To deliver a smoother, quieter, more pleasant boating experience, the new outboards feature tightly sealed top cowls and idle relief muffler systems to lessen high-frequency exhaust noise. A top-mounted throttle body fine-tunes intake noise, while an exclusive Focused Mount System is said to greatly reduces vibration. Even the trim pump is designed to run significantly quieter, and a new clutch system reduces shock while shifting into gear.
These new Fourstroke outboards also feature Mercury's anti-corrosion protection that includes Mercury's exclusive XK360 low-copper alloy, liberal use of stainless steel components and the MercFusion paint process, which is engineered for the harshest marine environments. Mercury backs up its corrosion protection with a three-year factory-backed limited warranty.
Maintenance-Free Valve Train
Easy to maintain, the new outboards feature a lifetime maintenance-free valve train, no-mess oil-change system, no-tools-required fuel filter, colour-coded maintenance locators and an up-front freshwater valve flush system. A maintenance label under the cowl provides all the information necessary to perform 100-hour and 300-hour checks, along with a convenient QR code that links the user via smartphone to a dedicated Mercury mobile site that provides a series of ‘how to' maintenance videos, troubleshooting tips, a dealer locator and a hotline to Mercury Marine.
