In late 2012, marine distribution company, Mermaid Marine Products, came up with an idea for showing its support for the Children's' Wish Foundation, while providing something of value for local fishermen and women.
The Charlottetown, PEI-based company designed a line of clothing called ‘Support your Local Fisher,' which it launched it in its 2013 Mermaid Marine product catalogue. The company says the line was very well received. In the first year, Mermaid says it raised $7,000 for Children's Wish.
"We are very pleased to be part of this worthy initiative and to be tied to the philanthropic efforts of a community-minded company that seeks to give back to the areas in which they're focused,' says Beth Corney Gautier, Director of the Children's Wish Foundation's PEI Chapter. "Mermaid approach us last year to see if we would be interested in being their charity of choice for a clothing line. The $7,000 Mermaid presented to us will be divided between our chapters in the areas where funds were raised – PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec. The funds will be used to grant the wishes of children between the ages of 3 to 17 that have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. We look forward to continuing our work with them in 2014.'
Mermaid has also expanded the line after it says it received numerous requests for a women's pink hoodie. For that particular item, Mermaid will be donating the proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society.
