A new megayacht marina accommodating 65- to 180-foot vessels is scheduled to open along the Songhees waterfront in Victoria's Middle Harbour, Victoria, BC, in 2010. The 54-slip Victoria International Marina consists of 15,000 square feet of commercial space that will include a public restaurant, coffee house, kayak landing and storage, as well as other marine-related businesses.
“December 1st is our target commencement date for construction,” said Lachlan MacLean, Western Asset Management (WAM) Development Group's general manager, marina operations. “We're hoping the marina will be open by July 2010.”
Created through a partnership between Community Marine Concept's vice-president Robert Evans and WAM Development Group, the marina is designed to accommodate local and international megayachts on a permanent basis. Victoria International Marina is located just minutes from downtown Victoria.
“It'll be the first marina in Canada that caters exclusively to megayachts,” said Lachlan. “We've started to receive expressions of interest from local people from Vancouver Island and Vancouver. We're also expecting demand from Calgary and Edmonton, as well as down the West Coast, including Seattle, San Francisco and San Diego.”
Victoria International Marina's buildings will feature creative architecture that is designed to make the marina the focal point of Victoria Harbour's waterfront community. The marina's layout will include two symmetrical one-storey buildings on either side of the slips, featuring retail businesses.
