The Ontario Marine Operators Association (OMOA) is offering its members the opportunity to sign up for the Spill Recovery Workshop. Two spill workshops are scheduled, the first at Little Gull Marina, Buckhorn, ON, on June 22 at 9:00 a.m. and the second at Hurst Marina, Manotick, ON, on June 29 at 9:00 a.m.
John Theurer, President of Environmental Marine and Response Products (EMRP) will be conducting the workshops, which are designed to teach marina operators and their staff about the rules regarding fuel spills and how to correctly clean them up. The first part of the workshop covers legislation concerning a fuel spill, followed by a hands-on tutorial that involves participants cleaning up a mock spill using peat moss, which disperses in water in manner similar to fuel.
“EMRP did a fabulous job of bringing forth and presenting their material,” said Andrew Atkins, Owner of Peck's Marina in Lansdowne, ON. “Everyone that attended came away with information and knowledge that we all need to know. I would highly recommend attending.”
Up to three more workshops may be scheduled through 2010 depending on participation. The cost of attending the workshop is $100. A minimum of 12 people are required to hold a class.
