Parks Canada To Shorten Rideau Canal Season, Hours

Parks Canada plans to shorten the season and reduce daily hours of operation of the historic Rideau Canal and eight other canals to save money, according to a report published in the Ottawa Citizen.

According to the report, Parks Canada CEO Alan Latourelle informed staff about the service reduction this week in a memo that says the agency will "align the length of its season, hours of operation and personal service at locks on canals to focus investments on the periods of highest requirements.'

The Rideau system is scheduled to open as planned on May 18, but could close earlier than its scheduled date of October 10. Parks Canada will make a decision about a revised  close date over this summer.
