Despite sporadic rainfall and cloudy skis, approximately 140 members of the marine industry teed off at the third annual Boating Business Charity Golf Tournament held June 17 at the Shawneeki Golf and Country Club in Sharon, ON.
Following a barbecue lunch and waiting out an early-day shower, the rain clouds retreated and the game was on. A parade of 36 golf carts took off to the first designated hole for a fun-filled day of best-ball golf.
Experts with clubs as well, Sylvain Tisi, Ted Macauley, Graeme Bews and Dan Loughead won first place with a team score of -13. Meanwhile, Rick Moore, Will Walker, Steve Hawkins and Mike Dolan played an exceptional game as well, placing second with a score of -10. Finishing third with a score of -10 was Meredith Palmer, Art Enwright Jr., Colin Fraser and Petra Fischer.
Bragging rights for the closest to the hole challenge went to Ted Macaulay for the men and Jan Paris for the women, while the longest drives were set by Steve Hawkins (men) and Jocelyn Wyatt (women). Dave Crapper exhibited his prowess on the greens by winning the Textron putting contest. Thanks go out to Leon McGuffin as the Formula Media Group pro stationed at hole 14, who raised over $650 with the help of Formula staffer Barb Deppisch.
After a fun day on the links, teams gathered in the clubhouse to socialize, bid on the wide variety of silent auction items, and enjoy a full-course dinner. Afterwards, Rick Layzell of Yamaha served as MC for the live auction and announced the winners of the day's activity.
The real winners of the event, however, were the charity groups as the event raised more than $20,000 for Boating for Children's Charity. Proceeds for the charity will be split between Camp Oochigeas (Canada's first residential camp for children living with cancer), the Ontario Sailing Association Able Sail Access Boom Program (encouraging children and youth with disabilities to learn more about sailing), The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada (dedicated to fulfilling a favourite wish for children afflicted with a high-risk, life threatening illness), and the Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund (offering memorable summer holidays at camps across Ontario for disadvantaged, special needs and hospitalized children).
Boating Business kindly extends its thanks to everyone who participated, event sponsors and the accommodating Shawneeki Golf and Country Club staff who helped to make our third annual golf tournament a supreme success. We look forward to seeing you all next year!
