The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has announced a joint safety initiative partnership with Transport Canada August 1 to 8 that will allow Ontario boaters to dispose of expired recreational marine flares at OPP detachments across the province.
Boaters can drop off expired flares at any of the 165 OPP detachment locations, which will be turned over to Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety at the end of the week for transport to a certified disposal site.
“This initiative is a good time to remind boaters to check this important piece of safety equipment and ensure it is up to standard,” said Larry Beechey, OPP deputy commissioner – provincial commander responsible for traffic and marine safety.
The OPP encourages all boaters to check the expiry date on any flares they may have. Due to environmental concerns and the dangers of accidental explosion boaters are also advised to never dispose of flares in a landfill.
