Volvo Penta Announces Two New V8 Engines

Volvo Penta of the Americas, Chesapeake, Virginia, has announced the addition of two new V8 engines to its lineup, including a 225-hp and a 380-hp model.

Volvo Penta says the 5.7-liter V8-225 is the cleanest engine it offers, meeting the most stringent five-star voluntary engine emissions standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). It's said to feature a fuel management system that produces better fuel mileage, increased reliability and lower emissions. Volvo was able to achieve lower emissions by equipping the engine with dual three-way catalytic converters and heated oxygen sensors, and by optimizing the engine calibration.

"The fuel efficiency of the V8-225 puts this engine in a class by itself,' said Marcia Kull, Vice President-Marine Sales of Volvo Penta of the Americas. "It's perfect for fleet owners, high altitude boaters or anyone seeking a rock solid 225 hp performance package.'

Other V8-225 features include a Multi Port Fuel Injection system, which is monitored and controlled by an engine computer (ECM) and is designed to provide more responsive and smoother acceleration, turn-key starts in all weather conditions, reliable idling and reduced fuel consumption.

According to Volvo Penta, the company's new V8-380 benefits from a boost in horsepower while reducing fuel consumption by 12 percent. The engine features Variable Valve Timing (VVT) optimized for low-end torque and high-end horsepower, and more than 270 pounds of weight savings. The engine also only requires 87 octane fuel.

"Our dealers had the opportunity to test drive this engine earlier this year, and feedback has been phenomenal,' said Marcia Kull, Vice President-Marine Sales of Volvo Penta of the Americas. "To hear the excitement about the performance of this engine is a great payoff for the more than 10,000 hours of testing that went into its development.'

The V8-380 is also the same engine currently used in GM's current truck line up, and is considered by the company to be the most durable Volvo Penta has ever launched.
