The Store Mason's Chandlery Ltd. and the Port Credit Yacht Club (PCYC), both in Mississauga, ON, are actively taking names for their popular upcoming Women on the Water (WOW) training programs to be held in the evening at The Store November 18 and 25.
“As a seasoned sailor, I found that there was a need for women-only boat training sessions, so that women could feel more comfortable on a boat,” said organizer Lori Mason. “It doesn't matter whether you are a skipper or a first mate, there's always something to learn and share about boating.”
Already The Store has signed up 51 women for the first session, covering a variety of safety topics, and 42 women for the second session, which reviews essentials such as how to anchor, mooring, boat handling, being a green boater and tying knots. By the time of the program, The Store's staff expects participation in each program to approach 100 people.
The outreach to non-boaters in the community by both The Store and the PCYC has earned more than just the attention women seeking to upgrade their boating know-how. Mason was recently interviewed by Rogers Cable TV and appeared on Daytime on Rogers TV.
That being said, WOW isn't limited to just non-boaters either.
“We've had a lot of women who have been sailors for years too and they've actually got a lot out of it,” said The Store's Heather Duckworth.
Evening sessions will begin at 7 p.m. and cost $5.
The WOW program was first introduced this spring as a three-session event, which included on-water education.
