The Port Credit Yacht Club will host a two-seminar Women on the Water (WOW) event on the evenings of March 23 and 30 in Mississauga, ON.
WOW seminars are designed to teach women how to react in emergency situations aboard their boats. Lori Mason, organizer of the WOW program at the yacht club, expects 40 to 50 women will attend.
“I hold these events to help women become more involved in boating,” explains Mason. “As part of my support for the Discover Boating program, I send people who participate in WOW events to where they can learn more about boat handling, such as power squadrons, and sailing and power boating schools to receive proper hands-on training.”
The first seminar will include instruction on firing flares, vessel maneuvering in a man overboard scenario, calling for assistance on the radio and determining position. The second seminar will cover docking, knot tying and mooring.
“Traditionally women boaters have been pre-occupied with galley duties and their children, and never really get a chance to get behind the wheel of the boat,” says Mason. “Any boater can end up in a mayday situation and some women might find themselves without the knowledge and skill to help their families. I am hoping that these seminars will encourage more women to take an active role in skippering their own boat.”
Mason has been holding safety seminars since 1985. In 2008 she began offering WOW seminars after being approached by a group of women boaters. There is a $5 admission fee for attending each of the evening seminars.
