Marine Safety Training Workshops Available for Ontario Students

According to Boating Ontario, new and young workers are three times more likely to be injured during their first month on the job than at any other time.

In response to this issue, Boating Ontario will be offering a series of Student Marine Safety Training Workshop, which will be made available to its members at a discount ($135 per employee for members or $175 per employee for non-members). The association suggests all marina operators would be prudent to ensure its employees comply with all of the Ministry of Labour’s requirements.

“As an employer, it is your due diligence to ensure that employees know and understand their rights and responsibilities under the Health and Safety Act,” says Janet O’Connell, Boating Ontario’s CEO. “As their employer, you are responsible for providing them with the knowledge and understanding that they need to work in a safe manner. This workshop provides general awareness training in advance of your required job specific training, to ensure the safety of all your workers.”

The workshop features training segments including: Customer Service, Health and Safety, WHMIS / GHS, Workplace Violence and Harassment, Dock Operations, Spill Response Awareness, and Emergency Response Awareness.

Boating Ontario is reminding marine employers that the Ministry of Labour has plans to ‘blitz’ employers with young workers this year, to ensure they are in compliance with all of its requirements.

Employers can register their staff for Boating Ontario’s Student Marine Safety Training Workshops, offered in numerous regions across the province.
